Mosaic Applique

It s easy to fit pieces perfectly with this unique applique method. From Down Under, Australian designer Lorraine Carthew introduces readers to a new, free-wheeling technique, making applique even easier and more fun to do than ever. Lorraine s mosaic tile designs fool the eye and create quilted beauties. Simply draw the pattern and fill in with mosaic 'tiles'. The background then becomes the grout between the tiles. The author provides half a dozen beautiful mosaic patterns on three large pullout sheets for quilters to make. Among them are a cat, parrot, butterfly, dragonfly, florals, and more. Also included are instructions for selecting fabrics and quilting designs for mosaic quilts, along with a refresher on both needle-turn and raw-edge applique stitching. Lorraine s background is in fashion and design. She has been producing prize-winning quilts for ten years. Among her many awards are three Best of Show, Best Use of Color, and Viewers' Choice. She has written several magazine articles and her work has been extensively published. Read more...

Rezension

We never had really top-class equipment. This book is worth the price charged now for just his insight on chain design and sharpening alone. With the notes in this book one can save his saw, his equipment and get the job done much more quickly than if you do not have his notes and observations. I find the points of the author well arranged and most useful for our purposes. Summary: Just the basics
Rating: 3

I picked this book up as it was eligible for the 4 for 3 promotion. It covers the basics well, but doesn't go into as many specifics as I would like. If you have any real interest, you will quickly be through this book and looking for more detailed information. I suggest "The Backpacker's Field Manual" by Rick Curtis instead, as it is much more detailed and wont leave you unfulfilled.

But finish carpenter Craig Savage thinks that the most visible parts of your house - the details that you and everyone else see every day should get the attention they deserve.

In this video, designed for pros and home owners alike, Savage guides you step by step as he trims out parts of a house and shares his job-site savvy and secrets. You'll learn to mate pieces of trim precisely, negotiate unsquare openings and seat moldings solidly against bumpy walls and ceilings.

Savage starts with the basics. With the camera beside him and close up the whole way, he demonstrates how you can accurately cut the three basic joints: the butt, miter and cope. Read more...

Betty Scarpino discusses
THE BASICS OF
TURNING WOOD
As an industrial arts student at the University of Missouri 14 years ago, I first
used the lathe to spindle turn the pedestal for the table in the photograph. Since
then, my techniques and knowledge have grown and matured-as has the field of
wood turning itself. While [ still enjoy making traditional spindle~turned furniture
and objects, I also like what I see others accomplishing. Multi-centered and sculptural
turnings have pushed back the frontiers of what can be created on the lathe.
As with any craft, wood turning demands a strong foundation in the basics: the
properties of wood, tools and techniques, and design considerations. Building on
th is knowledge gives you the ability to express your creativity in a host of challenging
ways, from the traditional to the avant-garde.
Spindle turning represents one of the basics that a wood turner should master.
Among other things, it improves tool control, which helps with faceplate turning as
well. As a professional, full-time wood turner, I structure my teaching around the
basics it gives people a place to start, and it helps me to continue learning in the
process. From the Indianapolis Children's Museum to Wooden Boat School in Maine
to the Ontario Wood Show in Canada, I have derived tremendous satisfaction from
watching young and old getting hooked on turning. One of my goals as past editor
of American Woodlturner was to provide readers with Read more...

Metric Pattern Cutting, 4th edition

Since the first edition of Metric Pattern Cutting was published in 1975 to provide a straightforward introduction to flat pattern cutting, it has become the established textbook on the subject.

The fourth edition continues to offer an introduction to the basic principles of pattern cutting, with a range of good basic blocks and examples of their application to garments. The original blocks and many of the pattern adaptations have therefore been retained. However, the great expansion of casual wear, cut in jersey or stretch fabrics, has led to the growth of ‘flat cutting’ with no darting to create the shape and this edition devotes a whole section to this type of cutting. The sections on computer-aided design and grading have been updated. The size charts of body measurements have been revised, reflecting the changing shape of women’s bodies. Read more...
