Signal Analysis: Wavelets, Filter Banks, Time-Frequency Transforms and Applications

Signal analysis gives an insight into the properties of signals and stochastic processes by methodology. Linear transforms are integral to the continuing growth of signal processes as they characterize and classify signals. In particular, those transforms that provide time-frequency signal analysis are attracting greater numbers of researchers and are becoming an area of considerable importance. The key characteristic of these transforms, along with a certain time-frequency localization called the wavelet transform and various types of multirate filter banks, is their high computational efficiency. It is this computational efficiently which accounts for their increased application. This book provides a complete overview and introduction to signal analysis. It presents classical and modern signal analysis methods in a sequential structure starting with the background to signal theory. Progressing through the book the author introduces more advanced topics in an easy to understand style. Including recent and emerging topics such as filter banks with perfect reconstruction, time frequency and wavelets. With great accuracy and technical merit, this book makes a useful and original contribution to the current literature.

Vector Quantization and Signal Compression

This book is devoted to the theory and practice of signal compression i.e. data compression applied to signals such as speech, audio, images and video signals. The emphasis is on the conversion of analog waveforms into efficient digital representations and on the compression of digital information into the fewest possible bits. Both operations should yield the highest possible reconstruction fidelity subject to constraints on the bit rate and implementation complexity. The conversion of signals into such efficient digital representations has several goals: to minimize the communication capacity required for transmission of high quality signals such as speech and images or, equivalently, to obtain the best possible fidelity over an available communication channel to minimize the storage capacity required for saving such information in fast storage media and in archival data bases or, equivalently, to obtain the best possible quality for the largest amount of information stored in a given medium to provide the simplest possible accurate descriptions of a signal so as to minimize the subsequent complexity of signal processing algorithms such as classification, transformation and encryption. In addition to these common goals of communication, storage, and signal processing systems, efficient coding of both analog and digital information is intimately connected to a variety of other fields such as pattern recognition, image classification, speech recognition, cluster analysis r Read more...

Ultra-Wideband Pulse-based Radio: Reliable Communication over a Wideband Channel (Analog Circuits and Signal Processing)

Ultra-Wideband Pulse-based Radio lays the foundations of a new radio transceiver architecture, based on the Ultra-Wideband pulse-based radio principle. Instead of a continuous-time modulated carrier, the pulse-based radio system uses short electromagnetic pulses with a wide spectral footprint. This has considerable advantages for the reliability of a wireless link in an indoor environment. However, what is not accounted for in most high-level theoretical perspectives, is that a wide transmission bandwidth opens up a Pandora’s box of many complications at receiver side. A real-world wireless channel, for example, suffers from multipath reflections: multiple, delayed versions of the same signal arrive at the receive antenna and start to interfere with one another, an effect that is known as intersymbol interference. Also, a wide transmission band is a wide open door for in-band interfering signals, caused by other transmitters in the same frequency band. Read more...

Signal Processing in Electronic Communications

This text deals with signal processing as an important aspect of electronic communications in its role of transmitting information, and the language of its expression. It develops the required mathematics in an interesting and informative way, leading to confidence on the part of the reader. The first part of the book focuses on continuous-time models, and contains chapters on signals and linear systems, and on system responses. Fourier methods, so vital in the study of information theory, are developed prior to a discussion of methods for the design of analogue filters. The second part of the book is directed towards discrete-time signals and systems. There is full development of the z- and discrete Fourier transforms to support the chapter on digital filter design. All preceding material in the book is drawn together in the final chapter on some important aspects of speech processing which provides an up-to-date example of the use of the theory. Topics considered include a speech production model, linear predictive filters, lattice filters and cepstral analysis, with application to recognition of non-nasal voiced speech and formant estimation. In addition to course requirement for undergraduates studying electrical engineering, applied mathematics, and branches of computer science involving such signal processing as speak synthesis, computer vision and robotics, this book should provide a valuable reference source for post-graduate research work in industry and academia.
A Rapid Introduction to Adaptive Filtering

In this book, the authors provide insights into the basics of adaptive filtering, which are particularly useful for students taking their first steps into this field. They start by studying the problem of minimum mean-square-error filtering, i.e., Wiener filtering. Then, they analyze iterative methods for solving the optimization problem, e.g., the Method of Steepest Descent. By proposing stochastic approximations, several basic adaptive algorithms are derived, including Least Mean Squares (LMS), Normalized Least Mean Squares (NLMS) and Sign-error algorithms. The authors provide a general framework to study the stability and steady-state performance of these algorithms. The affine Projection Algorithm (APA) which provides faster convergence at the expense of computational complexity (although fast implementations can be used) is also presented. In addition, the Least Squares (LS) method and its recursive version (RLS), including fast implementations are discussed. The book closes with the discussion of several topics of interest in the adaptive filtering field. Read more...

Advances in computing performance and nonlinear theory are making nonlinear techniques not only viable, but practical. This book details recent advances in nonlinear theory and methods and explores an array of modern signal and image processing applications. The first several chapters focus on nonlinear signal processing theory, targeting three critical areas: filter analysis, nonlinear filter class design, and signal analysis. The remaining chapters explore nonlinear approaches across the broad spectrum of applications with signal processing components, from data traffic modeling and image enhancement to cutting edge applications in genomics. All of the chapters were contributed by well-known theorists and application-driven researchers who explore current and emerging nonlinear methods from their theoretical background and practical algorithms through the potential of these methods for solving important open questions. Nonlinear Signal and Image Processing: Theory, Methods, and Applications thus provides a singular opportunity to build a strong, fundamental understanding of nonlinear theory and methods and a foundation upon which to approach many of today's most interesting and challenging signal processing problems Read more...

These measurements are usually much smaller than the number of samples that define the signal. From these small numbers of measurements, the signal is then reconstructed by non-linear procedure. Compressed sensing has recently emerged as a powerful tool for efficiently processing data in non-traditional ways. In this book, we highlight some of the key mathematical insights underlying sparse representation and compressed sensing and illustrate the role of these theories in classical vision, imaging and biometrics problems. Read more...

Now, from the foremost experts in the field, this book leverages theory and techniques from non-related fields such as applied physics, communications, and microwave engineering and applies them to the field of high-speed digital design. This approach creates an optimal combination of theory and practice that is meaningful to practicing engineers and graduate students alike.

Review:
Heck and Hall have done a fantastic job in summarizing both the theory and practice of solving today's SI issues. The math behind topics such as linear network theory, frequency-dependent dielectric effects and filter design for equalization is rigorous, yet ample space is set aside for practical guidance as well. Of particular note is their thorough treatment of hot PCB SI topics as dielectric loss and surface roughness modeling, and preservation of causality in transmission line models. Transmitter and receiver equalization (DFE and CTLE) are well-described, as are analysis techniques such as peak distortion and bit-error rate. Finally, their summary of response surface modeling (RSM) approaches to desgn of experiments (DOE) is perhaps the first and certainly the most comprehensive overview of those methods as applied to PCB SI design available today. A book well worth purchasing if you are involved in SI modeling, SI simulation or PCB design. Read more...

Digital alias-free signal processing (DASP) is a technique for overcoming the problems of aliasing at extended frequency ranges. Based on non-uniform or randomised sampling techniques and the development of novel algorithms, it creates the capacity to suppress potential aliasing crucial for high frequency applications and to reduce the complexity of designs.

This book provides practical and comprehensive coverage of the theory and techniques behind alias-free digital signal processing.

Key features:
Analyses issues of sampling, randomised and pseudo-randomised quantisation and direct and indirectly randomised sampling.
Examines periodic and hybrid sampling, including information on processing algorithms and potential limitations imposed by signal dynamics.
Sets out leading methods and techniques for complexity reduced designs, in particular designs of large aperture sensor arrays, massive data acquisition and compression from a number of signal sources and complexity-reduced processing of non-uniform data.
Presents examples of engineering applications using these techniques including spectrum analysis, waveform reconstruction and the estimation of various parameters, emphasising the importance of the technique for developing new technologies.

Mathematical Methods and Algorithms for Signal Processing

Reader's review:
this book is really good for a signal processing researcher.
generally it is difficult for a new researcher to connect math to the signal processing methods. conventional signal processing books only give the bit of math as needed in the signal processing books and this makes it difficult for an inexperienced student.
in this book mathematics is explained in more detail and in the introduction of each chapter it is mentioned why and where you would need this math knowledge.
at the end of each chapter application sections are provided
where problems from signal processing are explained for that particular mathematical method.

there are also exercises.
however, this book can be difficult for a new graduate without any establishment of signal processing concepts and problems.
it is an excellent book for a phd student in my view and it can be a classic. Read more...

The book comes with a CD-ROM that contains Windows software (DSP Calculator) which allows you to experiment with some of the concepts in the book, and is good enough for professional use." Nuts and Volts magazine "... the approach is very interactive. The author alternately explains a concept (such as the polynomial series, the Taylor series, convolution, z-transforms, DFTs, and FFTs, FIR filters, and IIR filters) and then challenges the reader to use the interactive software (provided on a CD-ROM provided with the book) to experiment with these concepts. By experimenting with the software, the reader develops an intuitive sense of what is behind the mathematics of DSP." VMEbus Systems magazine

The theory and application of signal processing is concerned with the identification, modelling and utilisation of patterns and structures in a signal process. The observation signals are often distorted, incomplete and noisy and therefore noise reduction, the removal of channel distortion, and replacement of lost samples are important parts of a signal processing system.

The fourth edition of Advanced Digital Signal Processing and Noise Reduction updates and extends the chapters in the previous edition and includes two new chapters on MIMO systems, Correlation and Eigen analysis and independent component analysis. The wide range of topics covered in this book include Wiener filters, echo cancellation, channel equalisation, spectral estimation, detection and removal of impulsive and transient noise, interpolation of missing data segments, speech enhancement and noise/interference in mobile communication environments. This book provides a coherent and structured presentation of the theory and applications of statistical signal processing and noise reduction methods.
