Encyclopedia of Card Tricks

Jean Hugard's "Encyclopedia of Card Tricks" remains one of the most comprehensive and exhaustive texts on card effects even after 60 years of being in publication. A brief summary of the table of contents shows the variety of effects covered: impromptu card tricks, spelling effects, "you do as I do", special cards, special decks (Svengali, Mene-Tekel, Stripper), calculation effects, and miscellaneous card tricks. Hugard describes the effects clearly and accurately, attributes the originator of the effect (if known), and occasionally offers an editorial comment or suggestion. The book is quite literally a gold mine of information, awaiting an interested and motivated magician to mine its contents. I continue to amaze audiences with Stewart James' original handling of "Miraskill" (p. 330). And Kli Ban's "The Spectator Finds Your Card" (p. 348), in which the spectator finds the card I chose, has been in my routine for years. Virtually all effects require no difficult sleight-of-hand. However, Hugard does devote a chapter describing important card sleights. This Dover reprint is one of the best values in magic. With this volume, and possibly the addition of John Scarne's "Scarne on Card Tricks", any magician can develop an entertaining card routine that audiences will enjoy. "Encyclopedia of Card Tricks" belongs in every magician's library. Read more...

Sit 'n Go Strategy

It is appropriate for SNGs with an entry fee of $10 through medium stakes, although many advanced, higher stake players will probably benefit from reading this book. Many of the topics presented are too advanced for the beginning player, who should first gain some tournament experience, and an understanding of basic concepts before purchasing this book.
Sit `N Go Strategy is one of the best poker manuscripts ever published, and a major contribution to poker, as there has been relatively little literature on SNG tournament strategy. It is a well written, fairly comprehensive guide to playing low and medium buy in, one table tournaments. Sit 'n Go Strategy is logically divided into sections on Low Blind Play, Medium Blind Play, and High Blind Play, as well as a chapter, titled Sit `N Go Career Play which covers some additional concepts.
For low blind play the author teaches a very tight aggressive style of play, although he acknowledges, that other playing styles can also be successful, if the players are skilled at post flop play. In the medium blind section, Mr. Moshman also advocates tight aggressive play. However, he demonstrates how an extremely aggressive play can be the optimum strategy when the blinds increase, and table conditions are right.
Part Three, High Blind Play is an outstanding section, and is the hi Read more...

Squeeze Play Made Easy

This is a practical book on learning common types of squeezes. You won't find exotic (rare) sqeezes that belong in "Adventures in Card Play". Rather you will be taught general technique. Its explained clearly with good examples. (They are double dummy so you need to cover up the E/W hands)
Reese says that squeeze possibilities exist in 1 in 6/7 hands. That a lot! Even if other techniques will work (end play) you can still pull off some of the simpler squeezes once every 12 - 20 hands you declare. Imagine making an extra hand every 20 times you declare, thats quite an improvement in your success rate.
After reading this book I became more aware of squeeze possibilities. A good warning sign is when you have two 4-3 fits. Its likely that one opponent is long in both suits if neither divides.
Also covered is defense against squeezes and what to look for.
Reese says that Squeeze technique can't be picked up by playing, it needs to be studied. He suggests coming back to this book several months later and reading it again, and again.

Though that can be an infuriating response, the truth is, it really does depend. The key to becoming a great poker player is in knowing on what it depends. Decide to Play Great Poker teaches you to think strategically so you can identify the dependent factors behind every decision in every hand. Poker is a game of numerous variables: table position, flop texture, bet sizing, pocket holdings, players in a hand, personalities of the players, and so much more. Decide to Play Great Poker will teach you how to identify and analyze these variables, interchange them within basic game-situation templates, and leave you feeling knowledgeable, comfortable, and confident in any poker situation. Instead of just enumerating rules that work only some of the time, this book will teach you how to become a great poker thinker and strategist, so you can expertly navigate any new poker challenge that comes up. Most players think the goal of poker is to make money, but that's not correct. The goal of poker is to make good decisions. Money is simply the way you measure how well you're fulfilling that objective. Are you ready to start making world-class decisions at the poker table, as well as reap the substantial rewards that those decisions yield? All you have to do is decide: Decide to Play Great Poker now. Read more...

Cameron is a clever magician with lots of great ideas.
The Story: October 18th 2007, 2.08pm. Distress calls are received at Heathrow Airport from an inbound 'Boeing 747' from Florida. The pilot, three crew and twelve passengers have been struck down by a mystery illness. By the time the plane lands, 7 people are dead. Only one man, an American citizen named Cameron Francis, disembarks the aircraft without showing any symptoms of the deadly bug. He is immediately arrested and quarantined in a secret location where he remains completely oblivious to the chaos that is unfolding as the mystery virus sweeps the UK.

Interrogations of the suspect have revealed nothing. Claiming to be a close up magician, he carries with him a small attache case filled with cards, coins and other magical paraphernalia. Needless to say, his attachment to this questionable practice only serves to raise suspicion of his involvement in what could be the single most disastrous event that the world has ever known! Will the deadly virus be stopped? Will Cameron ever convince his captors of his innocence? Will the guards ever grow tired of his card tricks? Will Cameron ever escape? Find out in CAMERON FRANCIS - THE OMEGA MUTATION! Read more...

By forces unseen: The innovative card magic of Ernest Earick

When one enters card magic, the books are endless. Coming across By Forces Unseen is a special moment in any card magician's growth. It is a pleasure to read. Beautifully written and researched by Stephen Minch, you will find many otherbooks mentioned in the references that will advance your pasteboard path. Ernest Earick is a genius. Simply put when you learn the routines in this book your appreciation for sleight of hand will captivate your imagination. The construction of effects and sleights stand the test of time. It is a must have. Rarely does card magic come along as strikingly original as that found in this book. When it first appeared in 1993, Ernest Earick's name was little known, and some questioned if the ground-breaking sleight-of-hand described could be done deceptively. The answer, of course, was YES, and By Forces Unseen became an underground classic. Out of print for years, copies have been snapped up, fetching prices of hundreds of dollars.
Among the effects taught in this truly remarkable volume you will find chosen cards that fly from the deck when you clap your hands, cards that materialize at your fingertips when someone concentrates on them, selections that pop from the middle of the pack with a flick of your wrist...and 17 other extraordinary events. (Demonstrated in the above youtube video). Behind the shimmering veil of magic you will discover a rich body of innovative sleight-of-hand that includes motionless one-handed bottom palms, slow-motion fin Read more...

The Intelligent Poker Player by Philip Newall aims to reverse this trend by presenting a cohesive and sophisticated method of play in plain English. This approach in principle can be used to analyze any form of poker, although this book mainly shows applications in the popular forms of limit and no-limit hold em.
The Intelligent Poker Player is also the first book to discuss the emergent field of artificial poker intelligence otherwise known as poker robots. The best computers are capable of playing heads-up limit hold em at a world class level, and this book deconstructs some interesting features of their play. Read more...

Poker Isometrics: The art of applying isometrics to the game of poker in order to get fit, build muscle, lower stress levels, get sexier, stay off tilt, conceal your tells, oxygenate your brain, think clearly and play your best.

Let's face it. Poker may be the most high-energy and exciting game in the world, but the reality is that you play it sitting on your butt. We've all spent dozens of hours at a time sitting at casino poker tables or in front of computer screens--and we've all wondered: "In the long run, is it even possible to play poker every day and still be fit and healthy?" The truth is that while poker demands high levels of mental energy, it requires virtually no physical energy or exertion. Even the longest, toughest poker tournament gives you far less exercise than playing a single round of golf. Meanwhile, suppressing and holding back your body's "Fight or Flight" responses to risk and frustration can fill your blood with damaging stress hormones. Stressed out, tense, emotionally upset, frustrated and Tilted, players can struggle to think and play well. The REAL secret about Tilt is that the emotional responses that cause it are visceral, hormonal, physical reactions: physical reactions not easily controlled by merely changing your thoughts. To truly overcome Tilt, you must find a way to unleash your body and burn off stress and aggression while you play: Poker Isometrics. This book reveals hidden secrets and techniques of iso Read more...

My reasoning was that no amount of strategy,
fancy footwork, and oddsmanship will enable a player to win at poker, or any other card game, if he is up against a stacked deck. A seven-time World Series of Poker winner, he knows his craft and has now decided to pass a little of his wisdom on to less-skilled players. As the introduction stresses, this is not a book to be perused casually; rather, you read it like a textbook, a training manual for effective poker playing, at both beginning and advanced levels. As in Bellin's Poker Nation [BKL Mr 15 02], where the author explores the logic behind successful strategy, Hellmuth details card combinations and analyzes situations with the precision of a surgeon. And in both books the art of reading other players receives in-depth analysis. What's unique here is the breadth of coverage, focusing not only on traditional table play but also on online gaming, at which many high-end players now prosper. An extensive glossary makes for entertaining reading on its own, as does the impressive listing of Hellmuth's top-50 wins.
Treat Your Poker Like A Business

Writes Sports Illustrated: 'Dusty Schmidt (is) a model of entrepreneurial drive.' Dusty 'Leatherass' Schmidt is known as the definitive poker grinder, with a legendary ability to focus during marathon online sessions. But this isn't the ability to which he attributes his success. Instead, Schmidt says his multimillion dollar achievements are due to his applying old-fashioned business concepts to the game of poker. Five years into his career, Schmidt's resume is legendary: Nearly 7 million hands and 10,000 hours played. Mind-blowing win rates spanning massive sample sizes. $3 million won in cash games exclusively. Never had a losing month. With 'Treat Your Poker Like A Business,' Schmidt teaches other online players to monetize their abilities as he has. Schmidt writes that while training websites and instructional books have made poker players' games better, they haven't necessarily taught them how to make money. Schmidt schools readers on how to manage bankroll, rationalize variance, play more tables, move up in stakes, avoid tilt, create new sources of revenue, and --- most importantly --- become more profitable.

Over 300 photos show Buckley’s exact hand positions during each move. Read more...

Phil Gordon's Little Green Book: Lessons and Teachings in No Limit Texas Hold'em

With the advent of online gaming and televised Texas Hold'em tournaments, poker has seen an explosion in popularity in the last three years. To meet the demand for poker information, many pro players have written how-to books. Some are too basic for the experienced player, others too complex for the beginner. Gordon's book is the 12th poker book I've bought, and I rank it at the top for both style and substance.
The Little Green Book is patterned after Harvey Penick's Little Red Book on golf, and like Penick's book, it covers its subject with clarity and detail, and without pretense. Beginners and experience players alike will benefit from Gordon's book.

When I first bought this book i wasnt technically an advanced player. I understood the game, the rules, and many plays from just playing poker a lot. The problem with Hold'em is no matter how many books you read, you are destined to loose hundereds or thousands of dollars in the process of your Hold'em education. We have books like this one to give tips on how to cut down on the cost of your education. Honestly, if you're a regular player at the game of Hold'em you got to have this book for your collection. I say collection because all Hold'em players have a book collection :) Read more...

Caro's Book of Poker Tells

I am not saying that this book will win you the world series, but it will give you a huge edge over your competition. The reason is this: Without a knowledge of tells, you really only win the pots that your cards dictate. Yes, you can play better cards than your opponents and avoid trap hands, but with a knowledge of tells, you can win 2 types of hands. 1) you win the hands your cards dictate. 2) you win the hands that your oponents cards don't merit. If you can pick up weakness in your opponents, you can win pots just by betting or raising at the right moment and salvage a pot where you might have folded. Similarly, you can better identify when your huge hand might be second best. Caro breaks tells down into 2 main categories. Tells from actors, and tells from those who are unaware. The most important are those from Actors. It is Caro's contention that all of us act at the poker table and in life, it is instinctive and largely subconscious. If you can pick up on these signals, discern what the player wants you to do, and then do the opposite, then you can truly, truly dominate the competition. This book is a MUST HAVE for the serious poker player. Read more...

Other types of online gambling sites were launched before the first online poker room. Online sports books were introduced in the mid 1990’s which was also the time of online casinos sprouting up around the web.
It wasn’t until 1998 that the first online poker forum was launched. Planet Poker, which has since become a relatively small poker room, enjoyed the status as the sole online poker forum for a short period of time. Other online sites entered the fray soon after.
Paradise Poker was launched in 1999 and would soon become the industry leader. Today, there are many, many sites to choose from. A search for the most popular sites for online poker show over 1,000 matches, and a Google search gives over 50 million matches for references to online poker sites. Read more...

No Limit Hold 'em: Theory and Practice

No limit hold em is exploding in popularity. Before 2000, it could be difficult to find a game. In 2006, it is played everywhere in casino cardrooms, in bar backrooms and homes, and on the Internet.
Now anyone can find a game, but few know how to play well. Most players learn by watching television or by listening to dubious advice from their friends. While they may have picked up a valuable tidbit here or there, most players come to the table without a winning plan. These players have two options: wise up or go broke.
The world s foremost poker theorist, David Sklansky, and noted poker authority, Ed Miller, will wise you up quickly. No Limit Hold em: Theory and Practice is the definitive work on this complex game. It provides you a window into the heads of experts, teaching you in straightforward and enjoyable terms the how s and why s of winning play.
It covers critical concepts like manipulating the pot size, adjusting correctly to stack sizes, winning the battle of mistakes, reading hands, and manipulating opponents into playing badly. It teaches you about implied odds and how to size your bets and raises effectively. It even covers many principles of short stacked play that will give you a big edge in no limit hold em tournaments.
Never before have so many people played no limit hold em, and never before has there been so much opportunity to win big. If you want your share of the spoils, read this book! Read more...

No Limit Holdem Secrets

Hi, my name is Roy Rounder.
Of course, that’s not my REAL name. “Rounder” is actually a nickname that all my friends used to call me… gradually, it became a part of my “poker persona” and pen name.
I’ve been playing Texas Holdem for as long as I can remember… BEFORE the game exploded with popularity. No limit Texas Holdem is my game of choice-- as it’s been from day one-- and that’s what this book is about.
Let’s get a few things out of the way before you tackle this book…
First, be a responsible gambler. Don’t get “addicted” to poker and don’t play in stakes that are too high for you. While it’s true you can make a full-time income playing Texas
Holdem, don’t go betting your house payments at the tables.
Gamblers Anonymous has given me permission to reproduce a simple questionnaire that will help you determine if you might have a gambling addiction. It can be found in the chapter titled, “Are You A Responsible Gambler?”. Read more...
