Chernov explains 33 games in detail. The explanations make the moves of the master easy to follow and show the reader where to place his pieces to make powerful, telling combinations. Review The book contains 33 classic games with very detailed, elementary notes on the moves. A great format for explaining the game to a beginning player, and mostly well-written (it is somewhat annoying because it is repetitive: how many times do you have to be told the merits of e4?). I found it a very easy book to read, I was even able to get through it without a board on an airplane. However, even for a beginner, I think the book (written in 1957) should be approached primarily as of historical interest. The 33 games include one from 1952, one from 1945, one from 1942 and only 4 games from the 1930s. The collection contains only a single Sicilian and that from 1904 (and black loses, in fact the collection contains 24 white wins, 9 for black and no draws...a misleading distribution of results) The analysis is so entertaining and clear, it is truly sad to see how wrong it appears to modern eyes. For example, the repeated admonitions against h3/h6 to avert or drive away the g4/g5 pin...according to Chernev, this common move (albeit often not the best) is only good for allowing the opposing Queen access to one's King. One can sense disapproval of the fianchetto on similar grounds. Perhaps the best way to read this book is as a companion to Nunn's "Understanding Chess Move by Move" which is exactly the same format, at least as well written, 44 years newer and contains mostly games from the 1990s. In that setting, Chernev almost acts as a foil for Nunn's observations on how modern masters break the classic rules. But if you only want to buy one...buy the Nunn book.
